Currently reading ...

Here are a couple of books we have been reading and/ or are planning to read this year.
Honeypie is obsessed with horses, unicorns and fairies.
This book is a how-to guide on taking care of horses and learning all about them. It has some 3D features. Great for any little horse lover.

This is a cute series.

This series has beautiful illustrations.

We have been reading tons of Laura Ingalls Wilder books, so this will be a great book to follow. It is a biography about her with tons of photos . I love "DK" books.

And who doesn't love Pippi???
We have been listening to the audio book and following along with the book.

And on Mama's bookshelf??

I don't have time for fiction nowadays. I tend to feel like my life is ticking away while I sit and sloth through a story...
(at least right now in my life.)
So these are more up my alley.

Love this book!
I started the pointy elf hat. Super easy.

And this one is on my to-do list.

Honeypie and I have a couple of projects to make from this great book!

Our next project together is this cute doll. There are a couple of patterns that are easy to make with kids.

And of course new cookbooks...
Love Indian food!

Delicious!!

Oh boy! Chestnut ice cream!

Can't wait to try some of these recipes. This book was recommended by one of my teachers at the natural gourmet institute in NYC. Great recipe on how to make miso (takes a year) and how to make tempeh from scratch using black eyed peas, oat groats and kombu.

And...

Making these this week.

Making this tonight...

And these tomorrow!

And on Daddy's bookshelf?...

Great reads for 2011!

Friendship

I was thinking about resolutions and wishes and goals to accomplish and everything obvious a new year seems to bring to mind...
Wanted to write an inspiring entry like I did last year (peek here)...
but all I kept coming back to was the words of Ram Dass... "Remember...Be here now".
Not the future ... not the past... no list making and no regrets but just holding the present blessings that are in our lives right now. Loving and living that.
The word "friendship" came to mind.  The word "family".
How important that is to us.  As the 3 of us carefully craft a home here,
we are open. Our home has always been open.  We open our door, share our table, our things, our lives with others.  We open our ears, our hearts and in turn, we  give and receive love.
That is what friendship is to us.
There is honesty there.  There is "real" and "joy".
The joy that comes from real connections with others and loving what they are about.
That blessed feeling when we know we matter to someone... how we are loved in turn and how that touches us.  How that matters.
That is what we have been showing Honeypie since she was born.
We hope that we are mirroring good things, love and the comforts of home and communication and the blessings of friends.
Honeypie was asking me a serious question the other day.  She was confused and conflicted about missing old friends...
I told her that some people come into our lives and and quickly go ... that some may be far away but are always near just a phone call away and that some come and stay for a long while and leave footprints.   I told her that inside her there is magic... golden sparkles that are her being...that, which she shares forth with others. That it is wonderful how open she is but that it was important to feel that sparkle in return.  That she deserves the love from people that make her feel good and make her smile and rise up her spirits.  That those who cannot give that forth are perhaps those that quickly come and go in our lives.  It's ok.
It is just a part of life.  It made her sad but she understood.
In these busy moments... there is only right now.
And right now what matters is the love that comes from real friendship and the family you build around that .
Simple, true , based on deep communication that grows as we ourselves grow too.  Spiritually, emotionally, personally and physically.
For without friendship or family, how could we make those footprints?
Without communication, how would be know what is in each other's hearts?
How would we know what is in each of our minds and how would we continue to share joy together,  the ebbs and flows of our daily lives ...its ups and downs and  and go forth, onward into our days? learning from each other?

What matters for you?

Inside each of us there is golden sparkles... that which is our being.
And only those who listen closely will feel the magic of that.

"On friendship" by Khalil Gibran

And a youth said, "Speak to us of Friendship."
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay."
And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;
For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.
When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.
And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.
And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

Daisy scout update

I am soooooo excited! Why??? Because being a daisy scout leader rules!!! And even better? Being a daisy scout leader to the most sweetest coolest daisies there are! :)
It's been a busy 3 months !
Tons to do!
We are focusing so far on team work, golden rules, community involvement and environment awareness.

Doing tons of reading...

In October I baked some goodies to share (daisy scout ghosty cake pops)

Daisy scout friends

Made pilgrim bonnets with the troop in November.

In December we made scarves for other children who might need extra warmth this winter. (donated to a charity)

Mama's and daisy scouts worked so hard to make them together! :)
(they are a no-sew fleece pattern)

Made daisy scout Gingerbread christmas tree ornaments.

We made pinecone birdseed treat ornaments for the birdies during this cold winter season.

And...
We learned our Girl scout promise!

We ended the year by having a daisy scout pledge ceremony. Each daisy said the girl scout promise and was invested. They got their daisy pin and daisy blue center for their smocks.

We also went on our first scout fun trip. We went to the movies to see "tangled" and the daisy scouts earned a "movie" fun badge.
Next we will start to work on earning our petals for our daisy. The first one will be the orange petal, "being responsible for what I say and do". We will also start our cookie sales, learn about earning and saving money and start to plan our end of the year trip!
Fun!!
So thankful for all the great Mama's helping out with the troop and so blessed by the enthusiasm everyone seems to share !
Here's to a great 2011!

Oh my, jicama

What in the world is a "jicama" you might be asking yourself. I know you might have seen it in the produce section if your supermarket, perhaps right next to a yucca or a plantain. This lovely and delicious root vegetable is Mexican and sometimes called a Mexican yam though it tastes nothing like a yam. It resembles more like a daikon radish or turnip but unlike yams or turnips which you have to cook first before eating, this one you can eat raw.
It can also be used as a substitute for water chestnuts in Asian dishes because of the texture and resemblance in taste. It is a great crunchy, sweet and delicious snack.

A great way to eat it is by slicing one up like so....

Add the zest and juice of half a lime. Sprinkle on some sea salt and cayenne to taste !

A quick and DELICIOUS snack !
Honeypie likes it plain but daddy loves it with a huge cayenne kick and I, myself ...
With plenty of lime juice!!!
Yummmmm!

Try adding it to salads too!
