Unicorn Birthday Party!

Honeypie turned 6 this month!  I know... time flies.

So what better way to celebrate this year than with a magical unicorn party for my huge unicorn lover!  I made unicorn headbands for the kids to decorate during the party.  Here is how I made them... I used poster board paper.

I taped the horn closed and notched the bottom to be able to glue it to the white brow band.  Kids used glue and gold glitter to decorate the horn so it did not matter if you could see overlapping on the paper.  It got covered with the glitter.

I hot glued the horn to the brow band.

During the party everyone decorated their unicorn headpiece with glitter and markers.

We played pin the "horn" on the unicorn.  

Honeypie helped make horns for all the children.

She drew a giant Unicorn on craft paper.

Even daddy played! It was a hit.

We read "the little lost unicorn" and "unicorn wings".

Had plenty of unicorn balloons...

And unicorn goodies for goodie bags.

We painted unicorn houses to go with our little unicorns 

(found these at Michaels!)

We had a visit from a chocolate colored unicorn too!! 

 Everyone got to ride him!  He was very friendly and was named popcorn.

I made the cake of course!  

and I made vegan cupcakes with unicorn cookies on top as well.

YUM!!

"Six" comes only once and this one was another birthday to remember.

Magic and friends and sweetness!!

They say a girl's first love is her father, this is both beautiful and honestly true.

and though I didn't have a father to think about and look up to like that,

(my step father came into our lives later on in life and a good man he is at that...)

I have to say that i wished...

for scrape your knees and make it alright

for cuddling during a stormy night

for daddy days of drawing or gardening outside

We can't choose our past...

but we can choose our future 

I hope that when real love comes calling for honeypie... that she chooses someone true, honest, faithful, strong, funny, caring, kind and dependable like daddy.  

"you did good mama!", honeypie says. 

"I know!!!" i say back.  :)

(he did too though)...hah

Daddy day is everyday and on those days you might catch honeypie and daddy

latest cake making...

It was Sarah's wedding shower and she wanted a cake made for the occasion with cupcakes.

I immediately thought of the gorgeous book by Martha Stewart that I had and I decided to give a go at these beautiful "TUILE" cookie banners that I had been eyeing for a while.

Now the problem with Martha is that her recipes, whether craft or baking tend to have gorgeous photos that inspire and you feel you "MUST" try them but she always... always... tends to leave out something... and that is the disappointing part.

(who knows... maybe its me... i need things explained kindergarden style...)

but I do wish she was more specific ... added more information to her HOW-TO"S...

Less headache for me...

Here are the Tuile banner cookies I was tackling from her book...

DO NOT BUY THIS!

Problem...

she called for "foam board" and this is what I found at the store.

(I should have known that what I bought was foam core!!!!!!)

after some soggy experimenting and sloppy cookies that were smeared,

(AUGHHHH THEY DO NOT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO!!!)

I head back to the store to investigate this foam board issue...

My bad penmanship comes back to haunt me and notice the smeared edges of the cookies...

OK!!! Found the proper foam board... Its that foamy material you find at craft stores that those foamy stickers are made out of...

Third attempt... not bad ... too bad about my handwriting...

Much better!

Oh you do have to use the silicone baking mat. I tried parchment paper and it was messy.

I begin the fondant sculpted figures

Cupcakes are decorated with hand sculpted flowers and doves.

Honeypie plays cake decorator with left over frosting and a cake layer I saved for her to decorate. A really fun project to do with kids. Sampling all the decorating "tips" for my piping bags. Stars, swirls, spaghetti!
